In a landmark consortium led by Architects in Practice, Stefan Shaw Studio secured the winning tender for the Hainault Community Hub—a pivotal moment in Hainault's evolution. The journey began with a co-design RIBA Stage 1 feasibility study exploring the possibilities of a mixed-use, residential-led redevelopment of the brownfield site. Our vision was to deliver a new community hub that rejuvenated the area while consolidating various council services into one centralized location.
Throughout, lively community engagement was a cornerstone of our approach. Local residents actively participated in shaping the project's direction, sharing their invaluable insights to meet the diverse needs of the community. The Personal Development Centre, Library and primary school that currently occupy the site and are to be re-housed in the final proposals were enthusiastic collaborators in the co-design process, providing clear ideas, concerns, and feedback.
These collaborative efforts paved the way for discussions on design principles and the types of programs and activities that the hub would offer. Our mission was to create a space that reflected the input and ideas of the community.
At its core, our commitment was to reshape these vital community spaces into a modern, adaptable, and inclusive hub that catered to a wide range of community needs. This endeavour represented a significant step forward in redefining the concept of community architecture and establishing a lasting symbol of Hainault's unique identity. Our design response and the outcome of the process integrated much-needed new housing, with 35 percent designated as affordable, consolidating essential services and promoting community well-being.
As we moved forward, we were excited to embark on this transformative journey, working hand in hand with the community to bring our shared vision to life—a vibrant and sustainable Hainault Community Hub that served as a beacon of unity and progress.
