“UN1T, WE TRAIN AS ONE is based on how I’ve been training for the last decade. Everything I know about fitness, distilled into a 12-weekcycle.” Rob Smyth, founder of UN1T
Stefan Shaw studio were approached by Rob Smyth and UN1T to undertake the design of a flagship high-intensity training (HIT) gym in the double height ground floor space at The Two Fifty One tower at Elephant and Castle, one of the most prominent new buildings in South London.
UN1T stands as a sanctuary for high-intensity and strength training enthusiasts, where every session is meticulously crafted to enhance and optimize performance. This core philosophy, encapsulated by the motto "WE TRAIN AS ONE," has been translated into a thoughtful and inspiring design that immerses members in a unified fitness experience.
The studio's open-plan layout embodies the spirit of togetherness, fostering a sense of camaraderie among participants who share a common goal - to excel as part of the UN1T community. With soaring 4+ meter-high ceilings and expansive full-height windows, natural light floods the space, creating an invigorating atmosphere. Exposed ducts, echoing the ruggedness of UN1T workouts, punctuate the space, infusing it with authenticity and raw energy.
The striking black and white colour palette, synonymous with UN1T, envelops the training area, serving as a dynamic backdrop for high-intensity sessions. This bold aesthetic choice reinforces the studio's commitment to pushing boundaries and achieving greatness.
Upon entering the reception area, members are welcomed into a double-height space illuminated by a bespoke black metal pendant, casting a warm and inviting glow from above. The utilitarian design of the metal desk and materials encourages a shift in mindset, signalling the start of each individual's transformative fitness journey.
The immersive experience extends to the changing areas, which seamlessly blend functionality and aesthetics. Two therapy rooms, strategically positioned on both the ground floor and a new mezzanine level, offer panoramic views across the training zone, creating an environment where members can unwind, recover, and reflect on their UN1T journey. This holistic approach to design ensures that UN1T Southwark is not merely a gym but a destination where people come together to train, inspire, and evolve as one.
