Placemaking at its core is a social endeavor, going beyond form and function to create meaningful spaces for people.
The Southbourne masterplan in West Sussex is rooted in an ecologically focused landscape approach, playfully arranging 35 residences in a mews-style layout, with 60% market sale and 40% affordable housing. Taking inspiration from the Arts & Craft movement, the design maximizes natural sunlight, incorporating locally inspired pitched roofs and intricate brick facades that blend with the environment, creating a connection to nature.
In the face of increasing urban density, this approach gains significance by tackling health issues and urban stress. The mews concept introduces green spaces and shared ecological areas, fostering a healthier urban lifestyle and improved air quality. Southbourne exemplifies the harmony between human living and nature, offering a pragmatic solution that upholds heritage during urban progress. The design incorporates contemporary features like rooftop solar collectors, passive solar heating and cooling systems, and eco-sensitive drainage solutions, highlighting our dedication to ecological sustainability. Meanwhile, nature conservation through retained hedgerows and mature trees nurtures local wildlife habitats and enhances biodiversity.
Guided by an ecologically sensitive vision, an uninterrupted ecological pathway extending over 650 meters facilitates connectivity and integration, aligning seamlessly with project goals, including the introduction of an ecological play area and a robust emphasis on community well-being. In an era where architecture and ecology intersect, the Southbourne masterplan serves as an exemplar of the harmonious integration of built and natural environments, ushering in a new era of sustainable living.
